A Gantry crane is simply a mobile crane designed to move and lift heavy objects and goods over short distances. Typically they are used on construction sites, but in today's world they can be seen in many different settings. In fact, you may have one in your own garage or in a school to move heavy equipment or goods from one area to another. Gantry crane can be both motorized and manual, and they are available in different sizes and capacities. A full-scale Gantry crane typically weighs somewhere between thirty and seventy tons, and can be powered either by hydraulics or pneumatics. These cranes are used more often on construction sites than any other type of crane, due to their ability to work in confined spaces. For example, an overhead bridge crane can move quickly across an overhead bridge without the risk of triggering an overhead collapse. These cranes are extremely versatile and adaptable, being able to work on both large and small websites. Some of the most commonly seen types of cranes are the overhead bridge cranes and the jib cranes. The over-the-top crane is used most often; it has a full crane basket, with tracks that move along the entire length of the crane, allowing for a much larger lifting capacity than smaller cranes. These cranes can work in tandem with other overhead beams and are highly specialized, only being used for large construction projects. They don't tend to be made as much as other types of cranes due to their size, however. Smaller jib cranes are still frequently seen, being used to move smaller loads over small distances. The main problem with the overhead bridge crane is that they are difficult to automate. Most overhead gantry crane require manual labor to drive them. This can make the crane operator feel very overwhelmed, leading to errors in judgment. Manual labor can also create problems if the machine breaks down or has an issue due to poor maintenance. Overhead cranes have also been known to cause problems on the job site because of the sheer weight of the crane itself, requiring extra manpower to help lift the crane off the ground or because the ground is slippery due to wet ice. Another problem with overhead cranes is that the safety of those working near the crane is not always known. Construction cranes are often very loud, creating a dangerous situation for those nearby. There have also been reports of the operator falling backward from the boom area. These incidents can be very damaging to the person working below if it falls off the crane. Construction cranes are also incredibly strong, being able to lift extremely heavy loads. If an overhead construction crane begins to fail, it can often cause the entire construction project to come to a screeching halt. While the Gantt chart may appear simple, in many cases, it is used in complex construction projects. Using the correct distance and time intervals between tasks is crucial to the completion of a project. Using a simple formula that links all the tasks together, the operator of a construction project can much more effectively manage the amount of resources being used.
